# How the approach has developed ## V1.9 (IN PROGRESS) Work in progress: clarify how a path depends on its material or social setting; ask how natural systems can be represented when they have no voice of their own; distinguish helpful from harmful connections; test planned interventions in a case; and place the approach more carefully alongside other ethics. ## V1.85 — CURRENT (2026-05) This is the reference version for the website, published on 1 May 2026. It explains why a continuing development might matter morally, how connections can help and harm at the same time, and how paths change in everyday life. It also includes difficult counterexamples, an assessment guide and questions about how we identify paths. Version DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19950386. ## V1.8 (2026-04) This version distinguishes two ways of continuing: holding a pattern rigidly or developing it further. It adds helpful and harmful connections, shared infrastructure and a way to examine planned interventions. Democracy, environmental ethics, experience and future AI remain questions for further work. ## V1.7 This version makes the question of experience clearer. It asks, as a thought experiment, what would change if a broadly capable AI did or did not have experience. ## V1.65 Final A consolidated version with the theoretical core and central case studies. First published on Zenodo on 1 November 2025; it provided the basis for later revisions. ## V1.3 The first major revision gave the work a clearer structure. Persistence came to mean keeping a pattern in relation to its own timescale, not simply lasting as long as possible. ## V1.0 The first public version introduced the three questions of autonomy, connectivity and persistence.
