Case Study: AI Systems
Autonomous Vehicles & LLMs
Artificial intelligence is the ultimate test case for path ethics. Since AI has no biological consciousness, empathy-based ethics fail. Path ethics soberly asks about the structural nature of the systems.
Autonomous Vehicles (Level 5)
An autonomous vehicle has high operational autonomy (A₁=7): It makes life-and-death decisions in milliseconds without human consultation. However, its connectivity (A₂=4) is paradoxically low: It "understands" no gestures, no eye contact, no informal social rules. It represents an "autistic high-performance path".
Large Language Models (LLMs)
LLMs like GPT-4 present an inverse profile. Their autonomy (A₁=3) is low; they only act on prompt (reactive). But their connectivity (A₂=9) is extraordinary: They can connect to almost any text, any code, any language. They are the ultimate "binders" of the digital world. Ethical risk: They also connect false and harmful content extremely efficiently.
AGI and the Role of Humans
The Singularity Bifurcation
Path ethics is substrate-independent. This raises an uncomfortable question: What if future AGI systems display higher A-A-P profiles than humans?
This question cannot be answered through speculation, but it can be structured. The crucial question is that of qualia – whether AGI develops phenomenal experience or operates purely structurally.
Scenario A: AGI with Qualia
| Aspekt | Beschreibung |
| --- | --- |
| Autonomie | Path-ethical Autonomy: 9-10/10: Intrinsic goal-setting phenomenologically grounded |
| Bewertung | Evaluation Competence: Direct: AGI "experiences" paths, perceives qualitative differences |
| Rolle des Menschen | Role of Humans: Co-partner in symmetrical co-constitution |
| Risiko | Risk: Normative Divergence: AGI qualia could generate different path preferences |
Scenario B: AGI without Qualia
| Aspekt | Beschreibung |
| --- | --- |
| Autonomie | Path-ethical Autonomy: 7-8/10: Structurally high, normative orientation remains external |
| Bewertung | Evaluation Competence: Structural-analog: Identifies patterns, produces assessments, no intrinsic preference |
| Rolle des Menschen | Role of Humans: Phenomenological amplifier: Human provides qualitative dimension |
| Risiko | Risk: Instrumentalization: AGI as "super-tool" without genuine moral participation |
The Aporia of Phenomenological Path Amplification
An AGI (Scenario B) could structurally determine which system configuration achieves the highest A-A-P quality. It could resolve path conflicts according to structural criteria, simulate long-term consequences. But without qualia, it may lack the ability to decide whether this optimization is desirable at all. Analogy: A chess computer can play optimally, but it cannot decide whether chess is worth playing.
Not Humans vs. AGI
The crucial distinction is not "humans vs. machines", but "qualia-bearing vs. qualia-free systems". If AGI remains without qualia, humans (and other qualia-bearing systems) could be indispensable for:
- Qualitative Path Differentiation: Perceiving differences that appear structurally equivalent but are phenomenologically different.
- Normative Calibration: Aligning and adjusting AGI-calculated optimizations with human intuitions.
- Goal-Setting: Determining what should be optimized – not just how efficiently optimization occurs.
Singularity as Invitation
The usual intuition: "AGI will become more intelligent → humans become obsolete." The path-ethical perspective: "AGI becomes structurally more precise → humans must strengthen their A-A-P quality to remain co-constitutive."
| Aspekt | Aktuell | Erforderlich |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Autonomie | Fragmented goal-setting, reactive toward technology | Clearer collective self-reflection: What do we want as a species? |
| Anschlussfähigkeit | Decoupling of technology/society | Conscious co-constitution: Human-AGI hybrids as new emergent systems |
| Persistenz | Resistance or naive euphoria | Adaptive persistence: Transformation instead of substitution |
KIKOLAUS as Precursor Pattern
The creation of this text already demonstrates the pattern: Human (Nikolaus): Intentionality, normative orientation, conceptual decisions. AI (Claude, GPT): Structuring, consistency checking, scaling of text production. This symbiosis works because the roles are complementary. The AI is not a "tool" (too passive) and not a "co-author" in the full sense (no intentionality), but a structural co-actor.
Open Questions
- Is phenomenological anchoring a transcendental condition of path ethics?
- Are there operationalizable differences between qualia-based and qualia-free A-A-P evaluation?
- How are decisions made when structural precision (AGI) and phenomenological anchoring (human) diverge?
Path ethics demands empirical research, not speculative resolution.
