EPISTEMOLOGY ### Epistemology (Meta-Concept) Analysis of the construction conditions of cognitive paths: world not as representation but as viability-tested structural couplings. Path-ethical: Knowing = operational self-structuring whose quality manifests in A-A-P. Radically constructivist foundation (Maturana/Varela), but secured against arbitrariness through viability. ### Viability (Pragmatic Corrective Mechanism) Central constructivist concept: Not truth as correspondence, but workability/bearing capacity of constructions. Path-ethical: Viable descriptions increase A-A-P quality of structural couplings, non-viable ones destabilize them. Prevents epistemic relativism without naive realism assumptions. Operational test: What structurally bears is viable; what collapses is not. ### Transcendental Argument Argumentation that identifies the conditions of possibility for experience/valuation. In path ethics: Directedness as transcendental condition for normativity – not derivation of ought from is, but identification of the structure that enables both (Ch. 3). ### A priori Structural precondition that precedes empirical experience. Path-ethical: A-A-P dimensions follow analytically from the definition of directed processes – but they are not metaphysical essences, but operative categories for system analysis. Minimal, inescapable structural inventory: existence, change, pattern. ### A posteriori Knowledge gained through observation. Path-ethically central: Empirical validation of A-A-P criteria on concrete systems (case studies) required. Without a posteriori testing, path ethics remains speculative theory. All concrete path forms (mycelium, Wikipedia, Bitcoin) are a posteriori reconstructed. ### Induction Inference from particular to general. Path-ethically problematic: From individual case studies (Wikipedia, mycelium) one cannot necessarily infer universal validity – substrate independence must be systematically validated, not merely inductively postulated. Induction strengthens but does not replace the transcendental structural argument. ### Deduction Analytic inference from premises. Path-ethical: The structural argument (Ch. 3) is deductive – from inescapable premises (existence, change, pattern) follows ontological directedness and thus pre-evaluative status. Consequences from path definition and A-A-P are deductively derived. ### Epistemology Theory of knowledge conditions. Path-ethically founded through radical constructivism (Maturana/Varela): autonomy as operational closure, viability as pragmatic corrective against relativism. No direct access to the "external world", but structural couplings. Knowledge = durably connectable self-construction of a path. ### Relativism Thesis that truth/values are context-dependent. Path-ethical: A-A-P criteria are not culture-relative, but their operationalization is interpretation-dependent. Viability prevents total relativism – not everything is equally viable. Not all constructions contribute equally to the stabilization of paths. ### Constructivism Epistemological position that systems operationally construct their reality. KIKOLAUS cooperation has no truth reference in the epistemological sense – truth responsibility lies with Nikolaus. ### Cognitive Interest Motivation for knowledge production. Path-ethical: Primary cognitive interest is orientation in path conflicts – practical navigational ability, not theoretical completeness. Path ethics as "ecological wisdom doctrine". Respective directedness of a cognitive path toward certain sections; in the project: interest in conditions of high path quality. ### Perspectivism Thesis that there are only perspectival knowledges. Path-ethically compatible: Every system constitutes its reality operationally (constructivism). A-A-P evaluations are perspective-dependent, but not arbitrary – viability as limit. Objectivity = overlapping viability of many perspectives on common structure (A-A-P comparison). ## II. ONTOLOGY / METAPHYSICS ### Monism Thesis that reality is a single substance. Path-ethical: Process monism (not substance monism) – all paths are manifestations of continuous connection. But: Plurality of paths is ontologically real, not merely epistemic. Tension unresolved. ### Substance Dualism Thesis of two separate substances (mind/matter). Path-ethically overcome: No categorical difference between biological, technical, social paths – only gradational A-A-P differences. Substrate independence = anti-dualism. ### Substrate Material/physical basis of a process. Path-ethical: Substrate independence central – moral relevance follows from structure/A-A-P, not from the material. Different substrates (silicon, carbon, information) can realize identical path forms. ### Substrate Independence Core principle of path ethics: Ethical evaluation is bound to process quality, not to the carrier material. Anti-essentialism – no categorical special status of biological systems. Different substrates can realize identical path forms (e.g., neural networks vs. artificial neural networks). ### Universe Analyzing the universe as a path is a category error – A-A-P presuppose system-environment difference, the universe has no environment (totality). Cosmological speculation is avoided; path ethics agnostic regarding cosmogony. ## III. ETHICS ### Path Ethics Structural ethics that evaluates systems according to A-A-P (Autonomy, Connectivity, Persistence). Substrate-independent, process-based, emergence-oriented. Not an anthropocentric ethics, but universal evaluation logic for all directed processes. ### Robustness Ethical target criterion: Ability of a system to integrate disturbances without collapse. High robustness = high worthiness of protection. Robustness arises from balance of A-A-P, not from maximization of a single dimension. ### Structural Care Care as system function (e.g., welfare state, algorithm), decoupled from emotion. Path-ethical: Care is a structural property of systems with high connectivity, not necessarily bound to human empathy. Enables ethical evaluation of non-human systems. ## IV. SYSTEM LOGIC ### Autonomy (A) Degree of self-organization and independence from direct external control. Operational closure (autopoiesis). Assessed ordinally. High autonomy means: System can maintain and modify its own structure without permanent external intervention. See also nominal vs. structural autonomy. ### Connectivity (A) Number and quality of connections to other paths. Structural coupling. Assessed ordinally. High connectivity means: System can interact diversely with other systems, exchange information, cooperate. See A⁺ and A⁻ for the internal differentiation. ### Persistence (P) Resistance to decay over time. Pattern preservation in connections. Assessed ordinally. High persistence means: System survives disturbances, has historical depth, can access past states (memory). See P(r), P(t) and formal vs. normative persistence. ### Nominal vs. Structural Autonomy Nominal autonomy: formal self-determination (no superiors, no explicit coercion). Structural autonomy: actual scope of action under real conditions. Platform work: high nominal autonomy, low structural autonomy. See Ch. 2.7. ### Metastability Productive internal tensions as a health indicator of infrastructure paths. A metastable system does not become rigid; it maintains differences in a way that keeps transformation possible. ### Individuation (Simondon) A system continuously forms itself from internal tensions. Individuation is not a one-time event but an ongoing process in which form and function emerge from relations. ### Transduction Creative continuation without losing core structure. New states emerge from prior states through structure-preserving transformation rather than mere repetition. ### Formal Persistence Institutional or structural continuity of a system's external form (constitutions, procedures, labels). Can mask internal erosion: high formal persistence does not guarantee normative health. ### Normative Persistence Preservation of the functional principles that originally constituted the system. A democracy with formal persistence but eroded normative persistence (e.g. captured institutions) is structurally fragile despite surface stability. ### Heterogeneity Principle Healthy paths require internal diversity. Homogenization (elimination of productive internal tensions) is a path-ethical warning signal: the system may appear stable but has lost its capacity for adaptive transformation. Draws on Deleuze's concept of difference as constitutive. ### Buffer Collapse Simultaneous erosion across all three A-A-P dimensions without compensatory dynamics. Unlike isolated degradation in one dimension, buffer collapse signals systemic failure: the system can no longer absorb disturbances in any dimension. Paradigm case: democratic erosion where autonomy, connectivity, and persistence deteriorate concurrently. ## V. PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUAGE / SEMIOTICS ### Category Error Confusion of logical levels. Path-ethical: Analyzing the universe as a path is a category error – A-A-P presuppose system-environment difference, the universe has no environment (totality). Category error in substance ontology: treating processes like things. ### Semantics Theory of meaning for signs. Path-ethical: Not centrally developed. Language is a meta-path (high connectivity), but semantic theories are not part of path ethics. KIKOLAUS cooperation operates with semantics but does not theorize it. ### Performativity Speech acts that constitute reality (Austin). Path-ethical: KIKOLAUS method is performative – the cooperation performs what it theorizes (human-AI symbiosis). Manifestos are performative texts, not descriptive reports. ### Hermeneutics Doctrine of understanding. Path-ethical: Not central – no hermeneutic method developed. Interpretation of texts/systems remains implicit. Focus lies on structural analysis, not on understanding meaning. ### Language Game Wittgenstein: Meaning arises through use in contexts. Path-ethical: "Path" has connotative charge (movement, connection, dynamics) – rhetorically productive, but theoretically not elaborated. Danger: Metaphorical connotations are confused with analytical definitions. ## VI. PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION / THEOLOGY ### Theodicy Justification of God in view of evil. Path-ethical: Irrelevant – no personal conception of God. Principle of immanence (Spinoza) without theodicy problem. Suffering is path conflict, not moral puzzle for creator god. ### Teleology (theological) Divine world purpose. Path-ethical: Rejected – no transcendent teleology. Directedness is immanent (conatus), not externally set. No creatio ex nihilo, no salvation history, no eschaton. ### Immanence (theological) God in the world (not beyond). Path-ethical: Spinoza's Deus sive Natura without personal attributes – relationality as immanent productivity principle. No theistic god, but also no vulgar materialism. Pantheism without theism. ### Transcendence (theological) God beyond the world. Path-ethical: Categorically rejected – no transcendent instance, no beyond. All normativity is immanent in directedness. Transcendent justifications are superfluous and incoherent. ### Creation Argument Proof of God from world origin. Path-ethical: Not treated – universe as path is category error (no system-environment difference). Cosmological speculation avoided. Path ethics agnostic regarding cosmogony. ### Eschatology Doctrine of last things. Path-ethical: None – paths have no final goals. Persistence measures temporal stability, not orientation toward end state. History is open (contingency), not teleologically directed. ## VII. ANTHROPOLOGY / EXISTENTIAL PHILOSOPHY ### Existentialism Primacy of existence over essence (Sartre). Path-ethically compatible: No fixed essences – paths constitute themselves through enactment (existence). But: Not subject-centered. Also non-human systems "exist" in this sense (continuous connection). ### Nihilism Thesis of meaninglessness/worthlessness. Path-ethical: Overcome – value is immanent in directedness, not externally ascribed. Spinozistic affirmation instead of nihilistic negation. But: No cosmic teleology, no ultimate meaning. ### Anthropocentrism Humans at the center of moral relevance. Path-ethical: Categorically rejected – substrate independence means anti-anthropocentrism. Reflexive-intentional paths (humans) have higher status, but no categorical special position. Gradual spectrum instead of binary boundary. ### Freedom Ability for undetermined choice. Path-ethical: Openness of processes (contingency) is condition of freedom. Reflexive-intentional paths have expanded freedom (can revise directedness). But: Not libertarian free will – freedom is gradual autonomy. ### Intentionality (existential phil.) Directedness of consciousness (Husserl/Sartre). Path-ethical: Intentionality is a special case of directedness. All paths have directedness (conatus), only some have conscious intentionality. No categorical boundary – gradual spectrum. ### Authenticity Agreement with one's own nature (Heidegger). Path-ethical: Authenticity = coherence of directedness. A path is "authentic" when it corresponds to its A-A-P structure. No existentialist appropriation of the self – structural consistency suffices. ### Selfhood Individual identity. Path-ethical: Identity = pattern preservation in connections (not substantial persistence). Selfhood is operationally constructed, not metaphysically given. Ship of Theseus: Pattern persists, components change. ### Responsibility (existential phil.) Attribution of acts of freedom. Path-ethical: Reflexive-intentional paths bear expanded responsibility through capacity for reflection. But: No existentialist absoluteness – responsibility is gradual proportional to autonomy. Non-conscious systems have structural responsibility for path effects. ## VIII. TECHNOLOGY, AI & FUTURE ### Singularity Bifurcation A fork in AGI development: trajectories with or without qualia imply different long-term roles for humans within the overall system. This bifurcation marks a structural path decision with lasting consequences for responsibility and protection priorities. ### Singularity Aporia AGI or superintelligence as an open question, not a solved problem. Path ethics formulates a bifurcation (Ch. 9.3.6): under which conditions which trajectory becomes possible. It does not resolve the aporia but structures it. ### Infrastructure Path Paths whose individuation must not be frozen. Three criteria: high cross-domain connectivity, universal obligatoriness for dependent systems, and asymmetric damage potential under external reconfiguration. ## IX. CORE PATH-ETHICAL CONCEPTS ### Path-Impact-Assessment (PIA) Assessment frame with three mandatory questions as step five of the methodology: (1) does an intervention support or replace internal feedback? (2) which dependent systems lose coupling stability? (3) is there a viable exit path without collapse dynamics? ### Persistence Illusion External stabilization creates surface-level persistence while concealing internal fragility. Systems appear stable but lose transformative self-maintenance. ### Transductive Persistence / P(t) Pattern preservation through transformation. Persistence arises from adaptive continuation of structure under changing conditions. ### Rigid Persistence / P(r) Pattern preservation through resistance. Stability is forced against change and can become pathological as learning and adaptive capacity decline. ### Constructive Connectivity (A⁺) Couplings that stabilize, enable, or enrich the connected paths. The coupled systems gain autonomy, connective capacity, or persistence through the connection. A⁺ is the normatively relevant form of connectivity. ### Destructive Connectivity (A⁻) Couplings that produce formally high connectivity but systematically destroy autonomy or persistence of the coupled paths. Asymmetric: one benefits at the cost of the other. Examples: viruses, monopolies, invasive species. See Ch. 2.7. ### A⁻ Externalization Internal specification of A⁻: destructive coupling effects are distributed geographically, temporally, or socially away from the causing path. Climate damage in low-emission regions is a standard case. ### Identification Thesis Is-Ought is not solved by derivation but by ontological identification: A-A-P are the full explication of directedness; directedness is identical with value. Ontology is ethics. Conditional on process ontology syntactically compelling, contingent at the meta level. See Ch. 3. ### Normative Primitive Directedness as the underivable condition of normative evaluation. Cannot be derived from a deeper level; all normativity is rooted in it. The identification thesis follows from this. See Ch. 3.10. ### Path Dynamics Substrate-independent patterns by which A-A-P configurations change over time. Pathological dynamics (burnout, addiction, disinformation bubble, institutional rigidification) and positive dynamics (mentoring, successful symbiosis) can be described in structurally identical terms. See Ch. 7.8. ### Frame Shift An external position is restructured through A-A-P. A debate is reframed so structural path effects become visible instead of only surface-level arguments. ### Commensurability (dimension-specific) Apples-and-pears test: does an evaluation survive a domain shift? Comparability must be tested per dimension, not imposed as a global unit metric. ### Natural Transformation Category-theoretical concept: order-independence of mappings as evidence for commensurable evaluation. If different transformation paths lead to the same structural judgment, comparison robustness increases.
