Why Paths Matter
The Transcendental Structure Argument
Path ethics does not arbitrarily claim that paths are morally relevant. It shows that every possible evaluation – regardless of content – already presupposes structures that are themselves normatively charged.
The Inescapable Premises
Three statements that no one can deny without contradicting themselves:
P1: Something exists.
Even the skeptic who doubts must exist in order to doubt.
*→ Inescapable.*
P2: What exists, changes.
If everything were static, there would be no thoughts, no perception, no time. But I am thinking this thought now → therefore there is change.
*→ Self-reflexively necessary.*
P3: Change follows patterns.
If everything were equally probable, there would be no structures, no laws of nature, no regularities. But we observe: gravitation, thermodynamics, organisms, galaxies.
*→ Empirically indisputable.*
From Patterns to Value
4. Pattern = Directedness. Not every change occurs – some are more probable than others.
5. Directedness is constitutive for systems. A system without any directedness would be pure noise.
6. What is constitutive cannot be negated without abolishing the system itself.
7. The structure that makes evaluation possible (distinguishability of states) is identical with directedness.
8. Therefore: Value is not external to reality, but emerges from the structure that makes reality evaluable at all.
9. Paths are directed systems (continuous connection in an open process).
10. Paths have intrinsic value.
Not Derivation, but Identification
The classical objection states: "One cannot infer ought from is" (Hume's Guillotine). Path ethics does not circumvent this objection – it dissolves it: The distinction between "is" vs. "ought" presupposes value-free substances to which values are subsequently added. In process ontology, there are no such value-free substances. Processes are directed – and directedness is already the structure that enables evaluation.
> Spinoza's Insight: Ontology (what is) and ethics (how to live) are not two separate domains, but different perspectives on the same reality.
Important Caveat
This argument is a transcendental structure argument, not a mathematical proof. It shows the conditions of possibility for normative evaluation – not their compelling derivation from purely descriptive premises. Its persuasiveness depends on whether one accepts the identification strategy. This is coherent within process ontology but can be contested by strictly Humean positions. Applicability is subject to the caveat of empirical validation through case studies. Should the A-A-P criteria prove non-operationalizable, the justification would need to be revised.
